oldisbeautiful
I was at Embolden 2023, the national symposium on ageism and respect for older people, talking about the #oldisbeautiful project, a collaboration with Catherine Barrett and Celebrate Ageing and Maroondah City Council and 11 beautiful older people.
All the portraits can be seen at https://www.celebrateageing.com/beautiful.html
This photo is the first of many double A0 street posters I saw around Melbourne with the portrait of indigenous elder Auntie Sherree Francis - I gave an involuntary yelp when I saw it. If you see any, it would be brilliant if you could take a snap and sent it too me please (location would be ace too).
My call to action today was, if organisations/government want to combat ageism and create positive, real and powerful images of the older people who they are working with in their community, make sure photography is included in every grant application you do and your annual budget. Prioritise creating a photo bank of images that represent your older people. Don't let photography be an afterthought.
Thanks to Melissa Williams for facilitating the session today and also Elder Rights Advocacy. AND Tum Wuthipol Uj for the poster design.

Music is aLIVE Photo Exhibition for Melbourne Music Week.

A free event on Southbank Promenade showcases some of Australia’s best music photographers. Featured artists capture our favourite bands and iconic Melbourne venues, reminding us that music is the beating heart of Melbourne.
Curated by respected music portrait photographer Michelle Grace Hunder, this exhibition takes us on a photographic tour of Melbourne music. 2020 saw the closure of many of Melbourne’s favourite venues as the live music scene dwindled to barely a whisper. This exhibition reminds us of Melbourne’s vibrant musical heartbeat, urging us to return to our favourite live music venues to reclaim our love of live music, to dance and sing along to our local bands, to feel alive again.
