Thanks to JOY FM's Saturday Magazine show for inviting me on to talk about the IWD project, my work, favourite bands and the most daunting question - what gear do I use? Thanks to Fiona Brook, Michael Veitch and Jack for the chat.

oldisbeautiful

I was at Embolden 2023, the national symposium on ageism and respect for older people, talking about the #oldisbeautiful project, a collaboration with Catherine Barrett and Celebrate Ageing and Maroondah City Council and 11 beautiful older people.

All the portraits can be seen at https://www.celebrateageing.com/beautiful.html

This photo is the first of many double A0 street posters I saw around Melbourne with the portrait of indigenous elder Auntie Sherree Francis - I gave an involuntary yelp when I saw it. If you see any, it would be brilliant if you could take a snap and sent it too me please (location would be ace too).

My call to action today was, if organisations/government want to combat ageism and create positive, real and powerful images of the older people who they are working with in their community, make sure photography is included in every grant application you do and your annual budget. Prioritise creating a photo bank of images that represent your older people. Don't let photography be an afterthought.

Thanks to Melissa Williams for facilitating the session today and also Elder Rights Advocacy. AND Tum Wuthipol Uj for the poster design.

Everything Photobooks at PHOTO2022

Portraits happening in Millgrove

People of Millgrove have been photographing the town over the past few months in lockdown, but now photos of the people, and their pets are needed.

Over 50 photographs have been submitted to the ‘Millgrove Art Attack’ project which will culminate in a projection lightshow event on 9 April 2022.

Project manager Warburton artist and photographer Suzanne Phoenix said, “The photographs contributed are a broad range of scenes of Millgrove and I am very excited about how they are going to look projected onto the iconic Millgrove surfaces and spaces.”

“The thing that is missing is the faces of people and their pets too, so I am inviting people to have their portrait taken with me.”

On Saturday 18 December between 12pm and 2pm near the Millgrove Shops picnic tables Suzanne will be taking portraits that will be included in the projection event.

It can be just with individuals or also your cat or dog, bird or horse or any pet you’d love to see in the event. https://upperyarra.mailcommunity.com.au/news/2021-12-14/portrait-taking-opportunity-for-millgrove-art-attack-event/

Ballarat International Foto Biennale FotoBook Weekend is now going to be online on 16/17 October and Suzanne is on this panel 'The Shape of a Photobook Project'.

Focussing on one project each, the artists will talk about the initiating idea, making the photographs, book design issues, printing, launching, exhibiting and distributing.

Martin Kantor Portrait Prize Finalist

I have been selected as am one of the 28 Finalists in the 2021 Martin Kantor Portrait Prize which will be exhibited as part of the 2021 Ballarat International Foto Biennale from 28 August 2021 at the Ballarat Town Hall.

The Prize showcases portraits of culturally significant Australians, so as you can imagine I am so thrilled that the person is the one and only Amy Taylor of Amyl and the Sniffers. And as Amy said 'Go us!'.

My portrait is part of my International Women's Day series which you can see the other near 100 portraits over the last 10 years here.

Congratulations to all the other finalists. I didn't really think I would end up alongside Stephen Dupont one day.

Thanks to the judges Naomi Cass, Max Delany, Bill Henson and Fiona Sweet and the Prize that is supported by the Dara Foundation.

Re : Covered

To compliment the Yarra Valley Writers Festival, Re : Covered is an exhibition at YAVA Gallery and Arts Hub in Healesville. I am one fo the YAVA member artists who has works alongside an exhibition of illustrations by artist Elise Hurst (illustrator of The Ocean at the End of the Lane, by Neil Gaiman). Inspired by a reimagining of one of my favourite books.

Exhibition dates are 8 July to 1 August 2021.

Collaboration or Bust!

- Yarra Valley Writers Festival

My first panel! As part of Yarra Valley Writers Festival I'll be there with Leah Kaminsky (Ed. Animals Make Us Human) and Lia Hills (Haiku #putoutyourpoetry & Ed. Balit Bagurrk). Hosted by the shining light that is Angela Savage at what would have to be my favourite Warburton venue for the festival - the Warburton RSL.

Here's what it is all about - "Writing, in the main, is an intensely solitary - some would say lonely - experience. So what happens when the story relies on collaboration with others? What are the strengths - and weaknesses - of creating with the collective voice? Is it the ultimate art of compromise? Or is the work enhanced by the input of like, or possibly un-like minds? Meet three creatives who know, in conversation with Dr Angela Savage."

Sunday, July 182021, 1pm to 2pm
Venue: Warburton RSL

Check out the rest of the program, it is pretty special and even has a dinner at Projekt 3488 (which you have probably seen of the photos I've created there over the years) with Rick Morton joins Christos Tsiolkas. Nardi Simpson (Song of the Crocodile) talks country, connection and the power of story and Michael Veitch & his son Thomas Veitch will perform Oscar Wilde’s The Nightingale and the Rose.

Please join me if you up for a day trip or a weekend in Warburton - yes in the dead of winter so you can likely get some snow action too up Mt Donna Buang.

Beyond the Studio - Advocating for Women's Inclusion,Visibility, and Safety through Public Art Project

30 April 2021

I’ve been commissioned to work with Women's Health East to photograph women artists in the Yarra Ranges for the Beyond The Studio project. Above is one of the artists - Sioux Dollman having a chat with Georgina of Women's Health East

But what is still needed is more women of Yarra Ranges to send in photographs of public spaces they think could be improved by women’s art. It could be a bus stop, a public toilet, a walk way, a mall, a park. Every photo submission gets a $50 voucher.

The deadline is 10 May, see Women's Health East for the info on submission.

The photos of the public spaces and the artists work will be combined to make artworks of design concepts.

National Photographic Portrait Prize Finalist

- 13 April 2021

Living Memory: National Photographic Portrait Prize Finalist 2021

I was driving to work last week and thought I should probably catch up on my voice messages. There was one from Canberra, it was telling me I had been selected as a finalist in the Living Memory - National Photographic Portrait Prize.

I pretty much stopped breathing.

I have been selected out of over 3000 entries, one of 75 photographers of 80 portraits. And 2 of them are mine! I can't tell you which images they are. But I can tell you there is one each from 2 of the major personal projects I did during lockdown last year. The opening is on 30 July in Canberra and will be on exhibition there until 7 November then tours around Australia.

Thank you so much to everyone, especially my patrons for all your support. You all helped make this happen.
