Why We Walk: 2012-2026
‘Why We Walk’ is a photographic exhibition curated by Suzanne Phoenix for the 16 Days of Activism 2026, coinciding with Respect Victoria’s Walk Against Family Violence on 20 November.
Responding to this year’s theme, “UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and Girls: Ensure justice, protect survivors, end impunity,” the exhibition brings together 16 photographs from Phoenix’s documentation of protests, marches, rallies and vigils in Naarm since 2012.
From Reclaim the Night March, SlutWalk and Trans Day of Visibility to the Isla Bell Vigil, the Wade v Roe rally and No More: Rally Against Violence, these images capture collective action, solidarity and resistance, voices demanding justice, supporting survivors and challenging the systems that enable gender-based violence.
Together, they remind us that respect is more than words. Respect is solidarity, standing together and taking action. Meaningful change starts with all of us.
The exhibition is supported by QVWC and Respect Victoria and is on at Queens Victoria Women’s Centre, from 10 November - 11 December 2026, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
One photograph from the series is available as a limited edition print, along with 3 hand cut collage prints and a tea towel can be purchased here.
